Cuisinart EM-100 Espresso Maker

Cuisinart EM-100 1000 watt 15-Bar Espresso Maker Review

The Cuisinart EM-100 1000 watt 15-Bar Espresso Maker is a manual coffee maker for the budget minded home barista.  Thoughtfully designed, this easy to use model is well liked by those who like to brew their own espresso, cappuccino or latte.  And if you don’t like to grind your own beans, there’s a handy pod adaptor as well.  We like having the option.Cuisinart EM-100 cappuccino maker

Cuisinart EM100

Even though the price is just over $100, this Cuisinart packs an impressive 1000 watts of power and 15 bars of pressure.  This is comparable with many more expensive machines.  Also, surprising for the price, the casing is professional grade stainless steel.  It’ll look really snazzy on your kitchen counter.  Adding to the espresso-bar feel is a warming plate for your cups.  We really like that, since a cold cup can cool off the espresso too fast.  Also, the included tamping tool and measuring spoon are a big help in making the perfect coffee dose.

The positives

Value for money has to be the top point here.  This has come down from its original price by around $100, making it truly a good buy.  The optional ESE pods are great for when you just don’t have time to go through the pure coffee making ritual.  It has a self priming pump and is nice looking to boot.  The pump pressure is good and it comes with an instructional DVD which is far better at explaining how to use the machine than a manual. (When’s the last time you read a manual, anyway?)

The negatives

The biggest problem with this seems to be the machine getting clogged.  If you tamp the coffee down too firmly or grind it too fine, then it just can’t cope.  And once it’s happened once, it seems to get even more sensitive to this happening.  The steam wand is a little too long and the warming tray isn’t the best, but hey – it’s a $120 machine!  From the reviews on Amazon, it seems people either love it or they hate it.  There are no reviews on Coffee Geek for this machine.

The Bottom Line

If you enjoy decent coffee and want a home machine that’s not going to bust the bank, then the Cuisineart EM-100 1000 watt 15-Bar Espresso Maker is worth a look at.  Yes, it’s a bit finicky, and you need to spend a little time getting used to how it works, but when it boils down to it, you’re getting a whole lot for your bucks.  You need to be a little careful, but it’s easy to keep clean.  Remember, you’re here to buy a cheap espresso machine, so you don’t expect a $500 machine.  Sure, there are a bunch of neutral/negative reviews.  But, if you read them (and we did), you’ll see that on the whole, most purchasers were happy, or at least satisfied with the coffee it makes.

Buy with your eyes open and pay attention to the delicate points (tamping and too fine grinds), and you should be fine.
