The positives

This is a solid and well constructed espresso maker.  For fast, efficient brewing, the three way solenoid is a real bonus, letting you prepare your second cup as soon as the first has blasted its way through the system – just like the pros in your local coffee shop.  Reviewers agreed that it produces a superior espresso with great crema.  They also agree that you need to learn the exact quantities and pressure to use.  It’s not too noisy compared to some of the other machines on the market.Gaggia Classic

The negatives

The main issue with this baby seems to be the learning curve for espresso newbies.  If you’re going to grind your own (or buy pre-ground), you’ll need to experiment with tamping and grain coarseness before you’ll be able to get the best from the machine.  Of course, if you choose to use pods that will be done for you.  Another problem some reviewers mentioned is that the boiler is made from aluminum, not brass.  This means that it is apt to corrode over the years.  (But – that’s years!) There have also been a few mentions about the steam wand not being in the best place.  Although it does produce good frothy milk, it’s not placed well, and doesn’t have a good range of movement.

The Bottom Line

In the twenty odd years that Gaggia have produced the Classic, they’ve gained themselves a whole army of satisfied customers.  This Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine is the latest model and has some significant improvements over earlier models.  The brushed stainless steel case is handsome.  And the frothing wand really works!  (See some other reviews and you’ll learn that this is not a given.) What’s remarkable is that on both Amazon and Coffee Geek are generally positive.  And, remember the Coffee Geek crowd is very techie and picky.  But the solid build and durability garner praise.  If you’re a complete espresso novice, then it may prove a little too complicated.  But hey –a bit of effort and following UTube training vids and you too will soon be making coffee as good as your local cafe.
